Typing games

Free typing games in your browser, to measure how fast you type and to get faster. No signup and nothing to install, and they work with a computer keyboard as well as a phone's.

Why practise typing

We type all day: messages, email, homework, work. Yet almost nobody was ever taught to do it properly, and most people type looking at the keys, with two or three fingers. Going from 30 to 50 words a minute is not a record to show off: it is half an hour a day back for anyone who types for work or study.

The good news is that it can be learnt by playing. Typing fast is a habit of the fingers and the eyes more than a talent, and habits are built by doing a little, often.

What you can play here

• Typing Test is the typing speed test: common words for 30 or 60 seconds, and at the end your words per minute and your accuracy, worked out the way every test works them out, so your result compares with any other. The clock starts at your first key.
• Falling Words is the same skill turned into a game: words fall from the top and you destroy them by typing them before they hit the ground. Every ten words the level goes up, and the words fall faster, thicker and longer.

In both, the words are in English or Italian, following the language you chose on the site.

Which one to start with

If you want to know where you stand, start with the Typing Test: sixty seconds and you have a number. If you want to raise it without getting bored, play Falling Words, which makes you read the next word while you finish the current one. Then go back to the test and see how far the number has moved.

On a phone

Tap the game and your phone's keyboard opens. Both games are built for the space left above it: the text sits in the top half of the screen, and in Falling Words the ground rises to the middle, so no word ever falls behind the keyboard.
